In the “A Ghost Story” by Mark Twain the writer makes it clear at the beginning that this is a classic story about a haunted house. After all, according to the plot, the main character ended up in a house where all sorts of evil spirits started to act up from time to time.
Eventually the author makes fun of those who like to believe in all sorts of nonsense and fables in the story. In this particular case, it’s the Cardiff Giant.
